Title: The Knuckles of Skinnybone Tree
Author: [info]hansbekhart
Artists: [info]clex_monkie89 and [info]moment_of_sen
Rating: NC-17 (violence, explicit sexual content, disturbing imagery)
Summary: John Winchester walks the badlands, lost on the Path of the Dead, when he meets two mysterious men: a pair of hunters chasing the same ghost that he is, who tell him that he's wound up more than twenty years in the future. They promise to get him back to his own time - back to his young children - but refuse to tell him anything about themselves. The three men find themselves entangled with the warring spirits of the land, but John is pursued by nightmares and caught up between the two hunters, who are keeping secrets that John doesn't understand.
Notes: For the [info]spn_j2_bigbang challenge. My thanks as always to [info]sutlers, my two wonderful, wonderful artists and especially to [info]essenceofmeanin, who not only gave me a title for this story, but supported me every step of the way. Couldn't have done it without you, babe! I do have some bad news - [info]clex_monkie89's art might possibly be lost in the mail, so it will be added whenever one of us receives it, so please check back! Also, I'm back from hiatus and have internet access again, so I will be able to answer comments quickly. Thank you so much for reading!

Uhm, I really wanna read it, but its not death fic is it? Cause my heart cant take any more of that crap haha
4th-Jul-2007 01:45 am (UTC)
Nope! It's ... it's sad, but it's not deathfic. Nobody dies, which is good, because there's only like, four people in it.
4th-Jul-2007 12:03 am (UTC)
YOU! YOU MISSED THE BEST WANK IN SPN EVER. I LOVE YOU THOUGH.
4th-Jul-2007 01:46 am (UTC)

You have NO IDEA how much I've been looking forward to this, and oh man, I am so ready to pounce on this. :))
4th-Jul-2007 01:46 am (UTC)
Heehee!! I hope you enjoy it, babe! Now that I FINALLY GOOD LORD have internet access again (it got turned on TODAY, nice timing, right?), I'm very much looking forward to your story!
4th-Jul-2007 12:48 am (UTC)
I loved it. Although I ended up reading it to Beethoven's String Quartet in C# minor, which made me weep like a little baby through quite a bit of the fic.

Stunning writing.
4th-Jul-2007 12:57 am (UTC)
Although having now listened to Father Son, I'm wailing with abandon. Perfect.

Recced on my LJ.

I just saw this on my flist and all I have to say is...

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay. I'll be back post-reading with, you know, an actual comment of greater length. : )

YAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! in reply!

Dude, I can't even tell you how LONG I have been waiting to post this, like, for real. It has been an absolutely insane month/six weeks and just .... yeah. Anyway, hope you dig the story!
4th-Jul-2007 05:36 am (UTC)
I don't suppose you have this story in a single file format???
4th-Jul-2007 06:17 am (UTC)
Ahh, unfortunately, I don't. I lost my internet access in May, so I've actually done all of my editing and changes in private entries on my journal. What's on my hard drive doesn't really resemble what's actually been posted. I'm really sorry :(.
5th-Jul-2007 08:26 pm (UTC)
SO glad you're back, hon. Can't wait to get some free time to myself so I can crank up the soundtrack and read through it in one go.
5th-Jul-2007 08:43 pm (UTC)
Man, me too. I missed you guys! I hope you'll enjoy the story (and soundtrack! I must say, I'm proud of this one :) whenever you get to it, dude :D.

Thank you! I hope that you enjoy both!
15th-Jul-2007 01:42 am (UTC)
I downloaded the soundtrack and listened to it while I read this fic, and it absolutely did set the mood wonderfully.

I'm bad at feedback, but wanted to say I absolutely loved this fic. I completely adore John and I loved seeing him in such a big part in this, and I loved how you made them all so human. Something Wicked seemed to do no favors for John as far as fandom goes and I loved seeing how you showed another side of him.

And then the boys! I can't even begin to tell how much I adored the boys in this.

The one thing that distracted me was the then/than thing which I see was mentioned in another comment, but that's minor details. Just excellent fic, and thank you so much for sharing it with everyone. I've already been gushing about it to friends. Hee. :)
17th-Jul-2007 06:32 am (UTC)
Thank you so much! I really enjoyed putting the soundtrack together - it's what I listened to while I was writing it :D.

The thing that I love about Supernatural is how complex all of the characters are, and for me, having John around deepened that complexity in a really surprising way. Him being around changed their dynamic completely and even though we didn't get to know him that well in canon ... I loved him, and really loved working with his character. It really makes me happy if this story could make people understand him a little better, you know? But anyway, I could jabber forever, thank you so much for reading!
16th-Feb-2008 04:28 am (UTC)
I just wanted to let you know that the soundtrack is in large part no longer downloadable. The zip file isn't working and only a few individual tracks can be downloaded.
16th-Feb-2008 08:29 pm (UTC)
Aww, crap. Thank you for letting me know. I don't have access to the zip file right now, but I'll put the soundtrack up again as soon as I'm able.
19th-Feb-2008 08:09 pm (UTC) - soundtrack not found
Hi! Just came here from a rec, looking forward to a long read. I thought I'd let you know that I tried to listen to the soundtrack, but got file not found messages. First for the zip file, then for all the individual track, except for 1 & 12(which worked fine). Thanks for all your work writing.
20th-Feb-2008 03:25 am (UTC) - Re: soundtrack not found
Thank you for reading :). As I said to the commenter above you, I don't have access to the soundtrack zip file right now, but I should be able to put it back up in a week or so. I'll leave you a comment letting you know when I do.
20th-Feb-2008 05:07 pm (UTC)
hey! when I moved servers I forgot to tell you the new url for the soundtrack - it's here: http://furious-host.org/energybeverages/skinnybone-tree.zip

:))

sorry about that!
21st-Feb-2008 01:24 am (UTC)
Ahahahaha! Dude, did someone rec this soundtrack or something? Why is everyone so desperate to get it? This is weird.

Thank you so much, dude! You're the best.
11th-Mar-2008 03:36 pm (UTC)
This is awesome I just got done reading it!!! Is there anychance you can reupload the pic? I would love it to put with the soundtrack on my ipod...
11th-Mar-2008 04:53 pm (UTC)
Alas, no - I didn't have a copy of it, it was uploaded to the server by the person who made it. But I'll ask if they can reupload it, the next time I talk to them - when it gets put up, I'll let you know. Thank you so much for reading!
24th-Jun-2008 01:30 pm (UTC)
I still love this, even after the second time around. I'm snagging the songs too. The idea is very original. The writing feels intense, and I can literally feel the dry dessert air when I'm reading this *saves to favorites*
27th-Jun-2008 06:17 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much! I had a fun time writing with such a great setting to work with. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
4th-Aug-2008 04:32 am (UTC)
I'm so excited that [info]dodificus has made a podfic of KoST! I wanted to let you know that I'm compiling a podbook of it, as I did for Cheezburger.

Unfortunately, banners don't really work as podbook covers: they get compressed too much for visibility in the iTunes square window. I made another cover for the 'book which I hope will do. You can see it here.

It's too late to post tonight; the file is still uploading. I'll send you the URL in the morning. :)

I am too!! Have you listened to it? It's friggin' fabulous. And I'm so excited that you're making a podbook for it! The banner looks really cool. Something about it makes me laugh, in a really good way. Thank you so much for doing this, I can't wait to hear it!

Hey, I'm just about to read this story. My sister has been gooshing about it for the last couple of days and now that I have the time I decided to read it, especially considering she's pretty tough to please when it comes to SPN fiction. I'm sure I'll love it.
6th-Aug-2008 03:00 pm (UTC)
Heehee, I hope you do! Glad to hear about a goosher ;).
10th-Aug-2008 01:05 pm (UTC)
A thoroughly engaging and enjoyable story. Thank you!

I've never really felt compelled to comment before, but I just discovered the audiofic for this and had to tell you how much I love this story. It was the first slash/wincest fic I ever read (I'd actively avoided them until then) and was done in such a compelling and believable manner that I was blown away. I've since read many many other fics, but this one will always hold a special place in my heart as being the fic that expanded my boundaries (I think SPN does that to a person until you say boundaries? What boundaries?) and introduced me to the group of truly awesome writers in this fandom. So, thank you!
26th-Aug-2008 01:57 am (UTC)
**blushes** Thank you so much! I'm really glad to hear that you liked this story enough take a chance on slash/wincest and also that you liked it to comment and tell me so. I definitely take that as a huge compliment, and really appreciate hearing it - while Supernatural might definitely be the fandom that **cough** expands your boundaries, it's still really awesome to have written, you know, the story that could've helped. So thank you so much :).

It took me a week to listen to the podifc because I didn't want it to end! I had to keep stopping myself from finishing because it was just too good.

The way you've woven the Sam/Dean/John relationship was amazing and heartbreaking. And the descriptions are supurb! I think my favorite line (though it was hard to chose) was: "The clouds clot above their heads, scabbing over the sky."

I really, really enjoyed it :)
1st-Oct-2008 10:39 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much! Heh, I think I listened to it all in one go, or at least as close to it as I could. It makes a pretty good podfic, and [info]dodificus does an amazing job reading it, doesn't she? **draws hearts**

I'm really glad you enjoyed the story and the podfic! It was really fun for me to write, as is probably obvious :). Thank you for reading!

WOW. I'm going to try to find the words for this, even though I feel like all I could type is "speechless", because you deserve to hear praise for this. This is audacious writing, never tipping over to let the tension out, so it holds you tight in its grip from start to finish. The rhythm is slow and natural, and the pain is both very deep and very beautiful. You understand, as do Sam and Dean, that this kind of angst is a pain we seek out, purposefully. This is one of the most spectacular AUs on the tragedy of being a Winchester that I've ever come across. I would have been in tears at the end but I was filled with excitement and the joy of reading something so good. The podfic is a perfect accompaniment that I highly recommend. I could keep gushing, so if there's something in particular you'd like, let me know.

Thank you so much!! What a beautiful comment. I wish I knew how to adequately reply to it, to be honest. I keep trying witty jokes in my head that just seem flat and cheap. Maybe it's just the mood that I'm in. But I hope as inarticulate as I am right now, you'll take it as read that I am immensely flattered and pleased by what you've said, and I take it as a really high compliment. Thank you for reading.

Excellent, excellent writing. I loved the podfic, I think this is my favorite one yet. And the soundtrack was exceptionally well chosen.
